Quick Overview

The Partagas Capitols announced in 2017, are finally here. Splendid little cigars, 5” (129mm) by 42, they come in retro style metal packs of 5 cigars. These are true Partagas cigars, rolled with tobacco grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone, and offer rich and balanced typical Cuban flavors: wood, leather, pepper. They are not related to the old Capitols cigars, available until the mid-1980s, which were smaller and machine made.

Petit Corona / Marevas

Being part of the Línea Retro, the Partagas Capitols, like the Romeo y Julieta Club Kings, come in a 1970s style aluminium tins of 5 cigars. These kinds of packages were very popular at the time, and could be easily carried around and are now highly sought after by collectors. The tins have been specifically designed for Habanos SA and open up when the central logo is pressed, which is a very nice touch. No doubt that these beautiful boxes justify the price of the cigars.

Like the Romeo y Julieta King, the Partagas Capitol is a vitola called Mareva (Petit Corona) and looks very pretty. The wrapper is of Colorado tone and has a somewhat rustic look, there is a visible vein across it but it is very well rolled and the cap is perfect. It is uniformly packed, without any soft spot and it is pretty smooth to the touch. The tobacco used for these little beauties is the premium tobacco growing in the Vuelta Abajo zone, so you can expect the classic Partagas richness and flavors.

Smoking Notes:

Before lighting up

The cold draw is easy, but very good and brings some beautiful mix of cedar and spice to the palate.

Burn/ Draw

As soon as the cigar is lit up, typical Partagas flavors reach the palate: vegetal notes, some touches of sourdough bread and some spicy notes.

Initial third:

The first third of the Partagas Capitols is beautiful, it is a true Partagas. The main flavors are spicy (mainly white pepper) and vegetal. But the woodiness is building up all along the first third and replaces the vegetal flavors. There are also beautiful and deep flavors, the sourdough bread that was present at the opening. There are no rough edges, and the flavors are smooth and well balanced, on the edge between sweet and savory. The strength is just under the medium mark at the end of the first third.

Middle third:

The Partagas Captols gets richer and stronger in the second third, the strength reaches the medium mark. The flavor profile hasn’t changed much, there is still plenty of wood and white pepper. More flavors are now added to the mix, with some caramel, coffee and leather notes. The vegetal dimension has completely gone away. It is a beautiful cigar, a very good Partagas. It is like a bigger version of the Partagas Shorts.

Final third:

In the final third, the Partagas Capitols remains very enjoyable, still offering the same beautiful flavors as displayed so far: white pepper, cedar, coffee and leather. At times, the Partagas Capitols shows its young age with some burst of bitterness but nothing to hamper the amazing smoking experience of the cigar. It has indeed a perfect construction, smoking cool until the very end, while there are no issues with the burn. The strength remains medium until we have to ash the cigar.

In short, the Partagas Capitols is one of the best releases in recent years (not counting the Regional and Limited Editions) and is a cigar that any aficionado or collector ought to try. A true Partagas in a classic Mareva vitola.

Smoking time:

35 minutes – 45 minutes

A great little cigar , 2/28/2021

At first impression, the cigar might not appear to be a good value at this size, but I was dead wrong. This is a fantastic buy. By far one of my favorite Partagas cigars, in line with the D4 and Maduro. Definitely will purchase again.
