Established in 1865 by José Gener in the Vuelta Abajo region, Hoyo de Monterrey (“Valley of Monterrey” in Spanish) refers to the typical geography of the farmland used for the premium tobacco plantations. There is also a Hondurian Hoyo de Monterrey cigar brand that was started after the Cuban revolution. However, the original brand is Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey that is mentioned here.
The Hoyo de Monterrey brand is known to roll excellent quality mild-medium cigars in various sizes, the most famous being the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure No.2, the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure De Luxe and the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure Especial.
Around the middle of the 20th century, the Le Hoyo series was launched for a Swiss distributor, A. Dürr Co, and these cigars are generally stronger than the regular Hoyos.

Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe LCDH - 10 cigars
$239.00The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe LCDH is a light yet rich Magico, 4.5” (115mm) long, of 52 ring gauge, and comes in a 10 cigars box. In 2012 Hoyo de Monterrey, one of the oldest Habanos brand, decided to launch an exclusive line for La casa del Habano, and released the Epicure de Luxe. It is only using tobacco from the most valuable area in Cuba, the famous Vuelta Abajo. This smoke packs all the typical Hoyo de Monterrey’s flavours into a small yet exclusive cigar, that is comparable to the 2012 Limited Editions, but which is cheaper than these. The construction is superb, it is fully handmade, its high level of quality is on par with any cigar out of La Casa del Habanos. On the flavor profile, it is rather light in taste yet shows a great level of complexity and control of aromas. Released at the 2014 Habanos Festival, this big ring gauge cigar is reminiscent of the old brand, but with a modern twist that appeal to many big ring gauges aficionados. It sports a new band which reads “Serie Le Hoyo” but as any Hoyo de Monterrey, it is hand rolled only using tobacco from San Juan y Martínez district, where the brand was born in 1865.
