Received my second box of 5 Montecristo A's from Cigar Terminal.

My first box was dated Oct 2016. Those cigars had already aged properly by the time they arrived and were amazing out of the box. The wrappers are soft and oily and full of plume.

This second shipment is dated Dic (Diciembre or December) 2017--so they are only 6 to 7 months into the aging process. And it shows.

I smoked one from this younger box yesterday and you can tell that it really needs to sit for another year. There is still plenty in common with the other, older box, like the peppery finish and the relatively firm draw, which is almost identical.

But the younger cigars taste different in the first two thirds of the smoke. They taste almost green, crying out for more aging time. They are not harsh, just lacking in flavor that will most certainly come with proper humidor aging. The individual boxes holding each cigar are harder to open in the new box. And while well-constructed, the new cigars seem a little rougher in the wrapper. Just a little--nothing to worry about.

The bottom line is that if you are planning on buying these to smoke right away, and you get the more recent boxing date, I would rate the cigars 3 or 4 stars. Honestly, they need to sit for 6 months to a year before they will be ready to smoke.

An extra year of aging will make a big difference here.

Got a box of 5 a few weeks ago from Cigar Terminal. I used to smoke these regularly 10-20 years ago but could never find them until Cigar Terminal got them back in stock a month or so ago.

My box was dated sometime in 2016.

Smoked one upon arrival and it did not disappoint! Cigar had nice plume on it, which I carefully rubbed off with a slightly damp paper towel. The individual boxes for each cigar really seem to make a difference, as the cigar felt nice and oily. Very well constructed--especially for such a long, relatively thin cigar.

Smoked the 2nd cigar of the 5 a couple of nights ago. It was identical to the first cigar--plenty of plume and oil on the wrapper. It smoked amazingly well.

These A's tend to get a little acidic or bitter towards the last third, and that was the case with both of the ones I've smoked so far.

But the first two thirds is so compelling that I really don't mind. And that my improve with more time in the humidor. I store them in their individual boxes inside the humidor.

I have already ordered my next box of 5 since Cigar Terminal got in another batch (they had sold out after I ordered my first box). Yes, they are expensive, but if you want the best, I think it's worth it.

A great smoke to enjoy while entertained watching an NFL Wild Card game. Lasted me almost the entire game. Typical profile of the Montecristo line, with plenty of smoke and creamy texture. Thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended.

When you want the best - you grab a Monte A

The flavor of these Monte's is immense. Keep in mind the sticks I had were gifted in 2008 and I did not smoke the first until 2014. With 6 years of age, the Monte A is a flavorful, smooth, creamy, nutty, buttery, cappuccino powerhouse. This profile remained consistent throughout, so I wouldn't call it complex...but I love the flavor.

Construction wise the stick was straight as an arrow, with a few veins. Nice oily, glistening wrapper. Draw was great until the final third, which, in all honesty probably began getting plugged with tar due to the length of the cigar. It put out a decent amount of smoke but nothing to write home about.

If you love the Classic Cuban Monte flavor and a HUGE stogie. Pick these up by all means, but I would suggest laying them to rest in a humidor for at least a couple years.
