Inspired by the famous novel The Count of Montecristo written by Alexandre Dumas, reportedly very popular among the torcedores in Cuba, who would listen the lector reading the tribulation of Edmond Dantes aka The Count of Montecristo, while rolling the cigars in the factory. Therefore, the brand uses many references from the book, such as the six swords surrounding a fleur-de-lis, or the name of some popular vitolas such as the Edmundos series.
Montecristo was established in 1935 by Alonso Menéndez and with the help from British marketing expert Albert Dunhill, it quickly became one of the most sold brand in the world, still accounting for up to 25% of total Habanos SA’s worldwide cigar sales: simply the best-selling Cuban brand. There is also a Dominican Montecristo cigar brand that was started after the Cuban revolution. However, the original brand is Cuban Montecristo that is mentioned here.
The best selling cigars are the Montecristo No.2, the Montecristo No.4 and the Montecristo Edmundo series. The strength is relatively medium across the board, and Montecristo’s rolling quality is simply the benchmark for any Cuban cigar.

As opposed to No.2 and the No.4, the No.1 is little known, and this is a shame because this little stogie packs a true Montecristo experience in a perfectly rolled cigar. It is also a pretty strong smoke, oscillating between a medium and a medium to full bodied cigar. It is nevertheless very creamy and smooth. There are lots of earth, cedar, tobacco flavors as you would expect from a Cuban cigar, but there are also many other flavors, such as strong nuts, all kind fruits, some citrus, chocolate, vanilla. As other newer cigars, Habanos released this very short vitola (the shortest hand rolled cigar along with the H Upmann Half Corona), that fits perfectly the need for customers to enjoy a Cuban cigar in a short time. This vitola is totally hand made with long filler, using leaves from Vuelta Abajo, known for producing the best tobacco leaves in the world, in the region of Pinar del Rio. As expected from Montecristo, the Media Corona is perfectly rolled, a great draw and smokes beautifully. It is a bit more powerful than other Montecristos, because of its shorter length, so expect a body ranging from a medium to a medium-to-full.
