Established in 1865 by José Gener in the Vuelta Abajo region, Hoyo de Monterrey (“Valley of Monterrey” in Spanish) refers to the typical geography of the farmland used for the premium tobacco plantations. There is also a Hondurian Hoyo de Monterrey cigar brand that was started after the Cuban revolution. However, the original brand is Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey that is mentioned here.
The Hoyo de Monterrey brand is known to roll excellent quality mild-medium cigars in various sizes, the most famous being the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure No.2, the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure De Luxe and the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure Especial.
Around the middle of the 20th century, the Le Hoyo series was launched for a Swiss distributor, A. Dürr Co, and these cigars are generally stronger than the regular Hoyos.

Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe LCDH - 10 cigars
299,00 $USThe Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe LCDH is a light yet rich Magico, 4.5” (115mm) long, of 52 ring gauge, and comes in a 10 cigars box. In 2012 Hoyo de Monterrey, one of the oldest Habanos brand, decided to launch an exclusive line for La casa del Habano, and released the Epicure de Luxe. It is only using tobacco from the most valuable area in Cuba, the famous Vuelta Abajo. This smoke packs all the typical Hoyo de Monterrey’s flavours into a small yet exclusive cigar, that is comparable to the 2012 Limited Editions, but which is cheaper than these. The construction is superb, it is fully handmade, its high level of quality is on par with any cigar out of La Casa del Habanos. On the flavor profile, it is rather light in taste yet shows a great level of complexity and control of aromas. Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan - 10 cigars
299,00 $USThe Hoyo de San Juan from Hoyo de Monterrey is a tasty Habano, of Geniales format, of 54 ring gauge and 5.9” (150mm) long and comes in a 10 cigars cabinet. Released at the 2014 Habanos Festival, this big ring gauge cigar is reminiscent of the old brand, but with a modern twist that appeal to many big ring gauges aficionados. It sports a new band which reads “Serie Le Hoyo” but as any Hoyo de Monterrey, it is hand rolled only using tobacco from San Juan y Martínez district, where the brand was born in 1865. It is of light to medium flavor, very aromatic and rich smoke. One of the best Hoyo out there. Has a great potential for aging, which would make it even smoother. En savoir plus -
Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo du Maire SLB - 25 cigars
249,00 $USThe Hoyo du Maire is part of Le Hoyo Series and is of Small Panetela/Entreactos format, 30 ring gauge and 3.9 inches (100mm) in length. This cigar is part of the Le Hoyo series, a special series made for a Swiss distributor in the years 1940's and, as the cigars from this series, is pretty different than other Hoyo de Monterrey. The Hoyo du Maire, is a medium to full flavored cigar, with tobacco and wood as main flavors. There are also lots of toasted aromas, and notes of leather, cream and a bit of tea notes. Despite being a pretty short smoke, not more than half an hour, but still manages to provide the typical Cuban "twang" with a lot of complexity, while never being over powerful. The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.1 is a rich and creamy Habano, of Corona Gorda size, 5.6”(143mm) long, of 46 ring gauge, and comes in a 15 cigars box. It is a cigar of the next to perfect construction; the wrapper is smooth and slightly oily. It is smoking beautifully and the draw on this cigar is flawless. On top of that, the flavor profile of this stogie is incredible. Definitely a must-try for all the fans of Corona Gorda vitolas. There are flavors of wood, earth, hay and nuts. There is also lots of creamy espresso, and some mineral notes. It might not be the most complex cigar, but it nevertheless won’t let you indifferent. Some delicate touches of pepper also spice up the Epicure No.1, whereas in terms of strength, it never goes over a medium body.
