Established in 1865 by José Gener in the Vuelta Abajo region, Hoyo de Monterrey (“Valley of Monterrey” in Spanish) refers to the typical geography of the farmland used for the premium tobacco plantations. There is also a Hondurian Hoyo de Monterrey cigar brand that was started after the Cuban revolution. However, the original brand is Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey that is mentioned here.
The Hoyo de Monterrey brand is known to roll excellent quality mild-medium cigars in various sizes, the most famous being the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure No.2, the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure De Luxe and the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure Especial.
Around the middle of the 20th century, the Le Hoyo series was launched for a Swiss distributor, A. Dürr Co, and these cigars are generally stronger than the regular Hoyos.

Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo du Maire SLB - 25 cigars
249,00 $USThe Hoyo du Maire is part of Le Hoyo Series and is of Small Panetela/Entreactos format, 30 ring gauge and 3.9 inches (100mm) in length. This cigar is part of the Le Hoyo series, a special series made for a Swiss distributor in the years 1940's and, as the cigars from this series, is pretty different than other Hoyo de Monterrey. The Hoyo du Maire, is a medium to full flavored cigar, with tobacco and wood as main flavors. There are also lots of toasted aromas, and notes of leather, cream and a bit of tea notes. Despite being a pretty short smoke, not more than half an hour, but still manages to provide the typical Cuban "twang" with a lot of complexity, while never being over powerful. Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan - 10 cigars
299,00 $USThe Hoyo de San Juan from Hoyo de Monterrey is a tasty Habano, of Geniales format, of 54 ring gauge and 5.9” (150mm) long and comes in a 10 cigars cabinet. Released at the 2014 Habanos Festival, this big ring gauge cigar is reminiscent of the old brand, but with a modern twist that appeal to many big ring gauges aficionados. It sports a new band which reads “Serie Le Hoyo” but as any Hoyo de Monterrey, it is hand rolled only using tobacco from San Juan y Martínez district, where the brand was born in 1865. It is of light to medium flavor, very aromatic and rich smoke. One of the best Hoyo out there. Has a great potential for aging, which would make it even smoother. En savoir plus -
Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe LCDH - 10 cigars

In 2012 Hoyo de Monterrey, one of the oldest Habanos brand, decided to launch an exclusive line for La casa del Habano, and released the Epicure de Luxe. It is only using tobacco from the most valuable area in Cuba, the famous Vuelta Abajo. This smoke packs all the typical Hoyo de Monterrey’s flavours into a small yet exclusive cigar, that is comparable to the 2012 Limited Editions, but which is cheaper than these. The construction is superb, it is fully handmade, its high level of quality is on par with any cigar out of La Casa del Habanos. On the flavor profile, it is rather light in taste yet shows a great level of complexity and control of aromas. The Hoyo de Monterrey Primaveras is a 2021 special release Habano, a 6.62” (167mm) by 48 ring gauge, and comes in a luxury box of 18 cigars. It is celebrating the Chinese zodiac calendar, 2021 being the year of the Ox, which brings prosperity and wellness. The number 8 is considered a lucky number in the Chinese culture and it is pronounced ‘Fa’ which can be translated to ‘well off’ and ‘getting rich in a short time’. Presented virtually by the Habanos distributor for the Southeast Asia region, the 18 cigars come in an elegant enameled red and gold box, with the words “Year of the Ox” printed on the lid. The cigar is a Grand Corona, or more precisely a vitola de galera called Hermosos No. 1, which was previously used for the Montecristo Dantés Edición Limitada 2016, the Romeo y Julieta Hermosos No. 1 Edición Limitada 2003 and a La Casa del Habano exclusive release, the San Cristobal Mercaderes. Like all Hoyo de Monterrey cigars, it is medium in strength, so it shouldn’t be paired with something too strong, but is a great morning cigar which should only get better with some ageing. The Hoyo de Monterrey Hoyo Du Prince is a sweet and mild Corona, 5.1” (130mm) long, of 40 ring gauge, and comes in a 25 cigars box. The Le Hoyo Series was created apart from the Hoyo de Monterrey line, this explains the difference in names and shapes of the cigars. The Le Hoyo cigars are thinner and they are slightly stronger than the regular Hoyo de Monterrey. The Hoyo du Prince hovers around a mild to medium, which main aromas are of wood, earth and leather. There is a lot of sweetness in the aromas, lots of creaminess, some honey, some nuts, and some fruit notes also add to the richness. The spices are also always present, but never too strongly, just a tingle on the lips. Overall a mild and rich cigar, perfect for a morning cigar. Pretty affordable.
